Prominent among the many national and international examples of hactivism and activism using online mechanisms are:
Operation Chanology
In 2008, Anonymous conducted a wave of attacks aimed at the Church of Scientology, which was attempting to conceal a leaked internal video of Tom Cruise exuberantly praising the practices of Scientology. The Church threatened publishers with legal action if they refused to take down the video. The people who wrote under the pseudonym Anonymous galvanised support and engaged in widespread denial-of-service attacks against Scientology websites. They also ordered unpaid pizzas across America and prank-called the Church’s phones.
Operation Payback
The 2010 attack initially targeted the Motion Picture Association of America and other organisations, in order to support the file sharing website ‘The Pirate Bay’. The operation evolved when Wikileaks released over 250,000 diplomatic cables ranging from the comical to the highly confidential and embarrassing. After the leaks Amazon.com, whose cloud service was hosting Wikileaks data, ceased hosting services for the site.
Soon other companies began following suit with Apple removing the Wikileaks app from its store, and payment companies such as Paypal, Mastercard, Visa and Bank of America cutting off payment services to Wikileaks, thus putting pressure on the site’s ability to raise finances. Anonymous responded with attacks that disabled the websites of Amazon, Paypal, Mastercard, Visa and Bank of America for a number of days.
